A new photo of an Iranian opposition figures – Mir Hossein Musavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard — who have been held under house arrest for the past eight years has emerged on social media in the country–and immediately went viral.
Musavi and reformist cleric Mehdi Karrubi emerged as opposition leader during Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election. The Green movement mounted an unprecedented challenge to Iran’s clerical leadership but was blunted by arrests and the banishment of leaders of like Musavi. They have become symbols for Iranian civil society.
