So far the evidence is anecdotal, but history suggests it is likely that undercover police agents are among those provoking violence in the George Floyd protest in order to discredit the demonstrators and justify the use of force.

David Rovics at Counterpunch provides some historical perspective on the FBI’s Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO). Launched in 1958, COINTELPRO imported the techniques that the CIA used on foreign foes to disrupt and destroy civil rights and antiwar organizations hated by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.

the stenographers of CNN and NPR will rarely mention that local, state and federal police forces have a long and terrible history of infiltrating, undercutting, planting evidence, sowing division and otherwise destroying social movements in any way possible, including killing activists and then blaming others for the killings.

COINTELPRO agents assassinated Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in 1969, for example, and then claimed falsely that he fired first.  I recounted the whole disgraceful story on the 50th anniversary of Hampton’s death last December.

And, of course, false flag operations have long been a staple of U.S. intelligence, as the U.S war on Cuba demonstrates.

COINTELPRO was supposedly ended in 1974 but the mentality lived on in FBI surveillance of the Central American solidarity movements in the 1980s and targeting of “black identity extremists” in the 2010’s.

So, are FBI agents and undercover cops among those who are attacking the police and burning down buildings across this country?  While we may not yet have any concrete proof of this, we can assume, based on massive amounts of concrete proof of past activities of these so-called law enforcement agencies, that their agents are involved with many of the most egregious cases of small or ethnically-owned businesses being burned down.  This has been their modus operandi for a very long time.
